Blog - Hairspiration

I've been growing my fine, plain brown hair out and it's taking a long time. I've heard most people's hair grows at the same rate but I cut it to the nape of my neck two years ago and it's only now just barely touched down below my shoulders. My fiance, on the other hand, hasn't trimmed his hair in a few months and now has a veritable hair cape. This is my struggle.

When I was a teen, my hair grew like a thicket. It was hippie long and tragically, perpetually parted down the middle. As I got older, my hair lost the strength to support itself. When it started getting long it would start breaking, especially around the crown. There's a special kind of humility that manifests when buying hair thinning solution from the salon (with a gift card, of course) at 28 years old.

I use Aveda Invati
It's a tonic that invigorates your scalp to open pores and promote hair growth. It does this with chemicals and magic. Amazingly, and thankfully for the price, it works! I use it sparingly enough, targeting only the worst areas. While my hair isn't model-thick, I can no longer see my scalp anywhere I'm not supposed to.

On suggestion of my hair stylist I try to keep it short in the front to prevent the hair from breaking under it's own weight. However, I usually cut my own hair, and since I have the skills of a hyperactive monkey figuring out how to use scissors for the first time, I've managed to fashion myself one hell of a lady mullet.

(i.e. but 1000% less cute)

I have done my worst trying to get it to look respectable so there's nothing left to do but leave it alone and let it grow out. Time heals all wounds.

But I hate it right now. It's boring and I'm bored and winter is long. So I'm going to do something that the introvert in me is railing against and dye it a bright and crazy colour.

My experience with this begins and ends with high school experimentation with Manic Panic. And since I went to a progressive, do-it-yourself, fascist high school, I was never allowed to actually dye all the hair on my head, just the tips. This worked when my hair was long but since it's now 16 different lengths, I fear replicating that look will make me appear like some kind of diseased clown. So it's all or nothing.

But there are so many options:

and I'm not crazy confident that I can do it properly myself. I'd also like to avoid bleaching my hair if at all possible.

Which is why I'm asking you, dear blogosphere, for your help. Have you ever dyed your hair a bright colour? Did you do it yourself? Is it possible to get great results without bleach? How do you avoid looking childish, or cheap? What colour do you think would be best for someone with a very pale complexion?

Blog - ALL CAPS

So this genius article popped up on my twitter feed. Normally I would just bypass something so obviously shallow, misinformed and poorly written but today I thought I'd have some fun. Even though the author is using half-truths and hyperbole to create a veneer where it sounds like she's presenting reasonable arguments, here's what she's really saying:

1. Spending a few years as a ‘house spouse’ actually sounds awesome
Who the hell knows what they want to do in their 20’s. Having five to ten years to figure it out, while filling our Instagram with pictures of puppies and kiddos, sounds like a blessing. Neither stay-at-home-moms nor dads deserve ridicule or bizarre sympathy for taking care of their families.

FEMINISTS DON'T WANT ANYONE TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR FAMILIES! FEMINISTS DON'T WANT WOMEN TO HAVE ADEQUATE MATERNITY LEAVE OR MEN PATERNITY LEAVE. FEMINISTS MAKE FUN OF MEN FOR STAYING HOME WITH THEIR KIDS. FEMINISTS INSIST THAT WOMEN SHOULD NEVER STAY HOME WITH THEIR CHILDREN. IN FACT, FEMINISTS DON'T CARE ABOUT CHILDREN AT ALL. FEMINISTS WANT ALL PEOPLE TO WORK ALL THE TIME.

2. Sometimes us lady millennials like to shave our legs, dress up, and drop it low like no one’s watching
We’re not exploiting ourselves–we’re having fun, dammit, and we shouldn’t have to feel guilty about it.

FEMINISM INSISTS THAT YOU NEVER SHAVE YOUR LEGS, DRESS UP OR DANCE. THERE IS NO CONTEXT WHATSOEVER IN WHICH ANY OF THESE BEHAVIOURS COULD EVER BE EXPLOITATIVE. CRITICIZING A CULTURAL NORM WHERE WOMEN ARE EXPECTED TO DO ALL THESE THINGS TO BE CONSIDERED VALUABLE AND ATTRACTIVE IS THE SAME THING AS PERSONALLY CRITICIZING ME FOR DOING THEM. EVEN THOUGH SOCIETY AUTOMATICALLY REWARDS ME FOR DOING THESE THINGS IT IS NOT IMPORTANT TO CONSIDER HOW WOMEN WHO DON'T LIKE TO DO THESE THINGS MIGHT FEEL MARGINALIZED.

3. Chivalry is NOT dead
It’s nice when someone pursues you, takes you out on dates, and surprises you with little things here and there. The difference between Millennial women and our mothers is that we understand ‘chivalry,’ in this day in age, is a two way street; everyone, regardless of sex or gender, likes and deserves to be treated like they’re special."

IF YOU ARE A FEMINIST YOU MAY NEVER TREAT PEOPLE LIKE THEY'RE SPECIAL. FEMINISTS HATE DATING AND SURPRISES. OUR MOTHERS ARE THE ONES RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MISOGYNY AND SEXISM THAT USED TO PASS FOR CHIVALRY.

4. Cooking and cleaning are not only great ways to destress but they’re vital to healthy, happy living
No one should feel guilty about ‘taking time away from their career’ to keep a tidy home and nourish their body.

FEMINISM MEANS HAVING A DIRTY HOME AND NEGLECTING YOUR BODY. FEMINISTS MUST WORK ALL THE TIME BECAUSE BEING A WORKAHOLIC IS THE ONLY THING FEMINISM CARES ABOUT.

5. We’ve seen and felt the effects of being ‘raised’ by two absentee parents
We were raised in daycares and drive-thrus and can vouch that most of us didn’t turn out so well. Furthermore, with childhood obesity and depression rates ever-increasing there’s clearly something to having a supportive and nurturing parent at home.

THE ONLY WAY TO RAISE A CHILD PROPERLY IS TO HAVE ONE PARENT STAY HOME WITH THEM. TOO BAD IF YOU ARE TOO POOR FOR THIS TO BE AN OPTION. ALL WORKING PARENTS RAISE BAD CHILDREN. ALL STAY AT HOME PARENTS RAISE GOOD CHILDREN. DEPRESSION AND OBESITY IS DIRECTLY CORRELATED WITH HAVING A STAY AT HOME PARENT. FEMINISM SAYS THAT NO PARENT SHOULD EVER STAY HOME WITH THEIR CHILDREN AND THAT CHILDREN SHOULD ONLY BE FED FAST FOOD. WOMEN ESPECIALLY MUST WORK. IT IS INCONCEIVABLE TO A FEMINIST THAT WOMEN COULD EVER BE EXPECTED TO DO ANYTHING BUT PURSUE A CAREER.

6. Even though it’s an inaccurate portrayal, the word ‘feminism’ makes most men think of hairy armpits and angry, man-hating lesbians
Furthermore, a lot of what feminism seems to be doing now is the very thing it sought to destroy in hopes of peace and equality. The word has become threatening and creates a mentality of isolation and competition rather than the sense of collaboration this broken world so desperately needs.

LESBIANS, WOMEN WHO DON'T REMOVE THEIR BODY HAIR AND WOMEN WHO GET ANGRY ARE DISGUSTING SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE THEY ARE UNATTRACTIVE TO MEN. I COULD NEVER BE ASSOCIATED WITH SOMETHING THAT MEN DO NOT FIND ATTRACTIVE. I WILL NOT EXAMINE THE REASONS WHY THAT IS. BECAUSE THEY ARE UNATTRACTIVE TO MEN THEY ARE THREATENING. THIS IS TOO BAD BECAUSE MEN ARE JUST WAITING FOR WOMEN TO BE HOTTER AND MORE DOCILE SO THEY CAN GIVE US EQUALITY. BECAUSE IF HISTORY HAS SHOWN US ANYTHING IT'S THAT PEOPLE WITH POWER AND PRIVILEGE ALWAYS RELINQUISH IT WHEN THOSE WHO ARE MARGINALIZED ASK NICELY.

AND EVEN THOUGH FEMINISM ADVOCATES FOR RAPE VICTIMS, PEOPLE AFFECTED BY DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, EQUAL AND FAIR REPRESENTATION IN POLITICS AND THE MEDIA, EQUAL PAY FOR EQUAL WORK, THE RIGHT OF WOMEN ALL OVER THE WORLD TO DRIVE, GET DIVORCED, VOTE, NOT BE MURDERED OR MUTILATED IN THE NAME OF "HONOUR" OR SOLD INTO SEXUAL SLAVERY ETC., WHAT I REALLY CARE ABOUT IT THAT EVERYONE KNOWS I SHAVE MY LEGS BECAUSE THAT'S HOW PRIVILEGED I AM.

IN MY PRIVILEGED VIEW WITHOUT FEMINISM THE ENTIRE WORLD IS UN-THREATENING AND FULL OF COMMUNITY AND COLLABORATION. BARRIERS DO NOT EXIST IN SOCIETY. FEMINISM CREATES THEM. I WILL NOT GIVE YOU A SINGLE EXAMPLE OF HOW THAT IS THE CASE. WITHOUT FEMINISM, THINGS WOULD JUST SORT THEMSELVES OUT. FEMINISM IS NOT SUCCESSFUL IN ACHIEVING PEACE AND EQUALITY.

7. Most importantly, declaring oneself a feminist can feel victimizing and disempowering
Each of us is in charge of taking control of our life and working for what we really want. Some of us, both men and women, don’t want to be CEOs, scientists and politicians; and that should be okay too!

THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO ARE FEMINISTS ARE CEOS, SCIENTISTS AND POLITICIANS. NO FEMINISTS ARE ARTISTS, STAY AT HOME MOMS, HOUSE CLEANERS, TEACHERS OR UNEMPLOYED. FEMINISM DOES NOT WANT YOU TO WORK FOR WHAT YOU WANT. THE REASON WOMEN AREN'T EQUAL IS BECAUSE THEY HAVEN'T WORKED FOR WHAT THEY WANT AS MUCH AS MEN HAVE. IF FEMINISM DIDN'T POINT OUT HOW SOCIETY CAN VICTIMIZE WOMEN FOR BEING WOMEN NO ONE WOULD BE VICTIMIZED. IGNORING HOW I OR OTHERS ARE VICTIMIZED IS THE SAME THING AS NOT BEING VICTIMIZED.

And before you get your panties in a bunch, my dear feminist friends- take a second to think about the truth in these explanations. All the millennial women who “aren’t feminists but…” have a right to validation and acceptance; there is a reason why so many of these bright, talented, and ambitious women are rejecting a word, while simultaneously embodying the concept. For peace and progress, we all need to get out of our heads and be open to seeing the story from every side, not just our own.

EVEN THOUGH I'VE OFFERED NO OBJECTIVE EVIDENCE THAT FEMINISM IS UNPOPULAR WITH THIS GENERATION, I'M GOING TO PRETEND IT'S AN EMPIRICAL FACT. LET ME DISMISS YOU MISOGYNISTICALLY IF YOU DISAGREE. I HAVE A RIGHT TO MISREPRESENT FEMINISM. IT MAKES ME UNCOMFORTABLE THAT FEMINISM CHALLENGES A STATUS QUO THAT I PERSONALLY BENEFIT FROM AND ENJOY.

Fiction - "Resale"

This is a flash fiction sci-fi piece that promises to one day fit into something longer. I look forward to finding out the greater story as it reveals itself. For now, it's just a creepy little excerpt.

"Resale"

Her hair fell out first, leaving her eyes slick around the rims and her arms smooth like a newborn. Before her muscles retreated from holding up her bones she would pat the taut flesh on the back of her head and frown.
"This isn't what they promised," her husband muttered to whoever paced the hospital hallways. "She barely seems alive!"
When the machines around her bed fell into a silent vigil her body was removed to the flagship processing plant. There her carbon was cremated, hardened into diamond and packaged for resale.
Her husband took his receipt of purchase to the customer service counter located on the lofty main floor.
"I want a refund," he said, "your guarantee was for 5 years. She didn't last half that."
"Sir," smiled the woman behind the desk, "we understand your disappointment. If I give you a refund, however, you will forfeit your claim to her material. So, let me tell you about our profit sharing program! Every time a bit of her sells, you make money! With payments instantly transferred to your bank account, you won't have to worry about a thing!"

"Well," said the man. "Yes. Yes, I suppose that sounds fine."

Comic Book - Space Captain

For posterity, here is the preview comic book I co-wrote with Joël.

It debuted at Montreal Comiccon 2011 where it sold out it's initial print run. Our success there attracted the attention of CTV News Montreal who invited us on air for their live Newsmakers segment:

Enjoy!

Recipe - Baba Ganoush

One of my favourite things to do after a long hard day of writing for no money is to cook. My kitchen has an open view wall facing the living room. While my fiance plays video games, I set up my laptop on the bureau facing (well, on top of the microwave on top of the bureau facing - yes, we have a microwave in our living room. Apartment living is the bomb!) and watch some t.v., usually Iron Chef or some other cooking show.
image
If I'm really lucky I'll have a beer. If I'm super extra lucky, I have a little helper waiting for me by the door:
image
Tonight I made Baba Ganoush, a Middle Eastern roasted eggplant dip that's very simple to prepare.
First, you roast the eggplant, which I rub with olive oil and sprinkle with salt before putting it in the oven. Also make sure to prick it all over with a fork or else it will explode.
image
When it's ready (about 40 minutes), let it cool then peel the skin and discard. The insides go into the food processor (or you can mash it with a fork).
Next, 2 tbs or less of Tahini.
image
Depending on where you live Tahini might be hard to find, but it's essential and a 6 dollar pot will last you months in the fridge.
Add your seasoning. Basics are lemon, garlic and salt but everything else is to your taste. I like fresh parsley, pepper and a chili. Tonight I used half a jalapeno. You can also put cumin, black olives and sour cream.
image
Give it a whirl in the food processor and add extra seasoning as needed.
image
And that's it. Baba Ganoush is fucking awesome and you should make it and eat it with pita and veggies or over rice.

Essay - The Empress Theatre

I'm a sentimental person by nature and especially so when it comes to my city. I don't love my country - I appreciate it. I don't love my province - I respect it. But my city, where I was born and grew up and still live, with its insanity and its pulse and being truly somewhere that never sleeps and never stops and never lets go, I love.

This place is fucked though, and don't let anyone tell you differently. There`s corruption and poverty and unemployment and the mob and gangs and drugs (and drugs, and drugs), all made worse by the complete inability by anyone in power to put their finger on the real problem, name it and change it.
There are activists but most are wet behind the ears teenagers just looking for something exciting to do. The rest are career anarchists who would truly love to watch the city burn. Right now they're taking to the streets to protest a 70$ a year tuition hike. I have no faith in them.

The smaller protests, the ones with the feminists, the immigrants and the grassroots social workers or the ones that are keen to raise shields against the carefully calculated, government-sponsored, language-based initiatives meant to turn individual citizens against each other, barely make a blip.

Even when you think there might be a change, like recently when we elected the first Jewish Anglophone mayor in the city's history (someone we hoped may have an understanding of minority grievances), nothing happens. Because the money the mayor wants to pocket doesn't come as fast from everyday citizens as it does from the long established network of organized crime and old money executives and landowners. The city works just fine, for these people. The benefits of their positions are well ingrained. They don't need anything to change, so nothing does.

The infrastructure here is crumbling. I don't mean that figuratively. Concrete blocks from highway overpasses are falling onto motorists, killing them sometimes. Decorative facades descend from downtown buildings onto unsuspecting pedestrians, killing them too. Last week a sinkhole in the airport parking lot ate two cars. We used to worry about potholes here, informally but impartially called the worst in the world, but now that's the least of our problems. The city is protesting its own misuse and the ones to suffer are the casual worshipers, those who pay their tithes and work the land and just want to live in peace.

A perfect example of the city's ruin sits just a few blocks from where I live in the N.D.G. (Notre-Dame-de-Grace, or, Our Lady of Grace) neighbourhood.
image

The Empress Theatre opened in 1927 as a home to burlesque and vaudeville performances and premiere films. I can only imagine the culture and characters it must have supported (and I mean literally that I can only imagine - Montreal history, particularly anything to do with English-speaking Montreal, is criminally under-documented.) As the only theatre in Canada to be built in Egyptian - Art Deco style, the exterior may not be to everyone's artistic tastes but it cannot be denied that it is at least striking.

image

I have only ever been inside once, as a kid, when the summer camp I was attending took us there to see The Rocketeer. Since the theatre closed to the public in 1992 I could not have been more than 7 years old but I vividly remember the impression the building made on me. Having spent most of my short life either at home, in school or at the park, this theatre seemed a fantasy palace. It astounded me that the place I lived held such a remarkable thing.

I ran my hands over the ornate carvings and stared up at the frescoes with single minded awe, believing them to be as old and as significant as the actual Valley of Kings (a place I knew about benefit of a richly pictured book my mom once brought home to me.) This building made me want to know more about my city. It made me want to know about history in general, and art, and the experience of being in beauty. If that sounds overwrought, well, that`s just the type of child I was.

image

It's doubtful that I'll ever go inside again. The city owns it now and its representatives have publicly stated they will not contribute a single dollar to the theatre's restoration. Over the years a variety of non profit organizations have tried to raise funds for its redevelopment. One by one they have failed.

image

I've lived in this neighbourhood a long time. Watching the building deteriorate over the years has been heartbreaking. At present the exterior is officially cordoned off with metal barricades to protect passersby from falling debris. One of the King Tut sculptures is missing half its face. Graffiti is bright and extensive. The windows are covered in mangy paper, the colour of blown light bulbs.

There's talk, again, as there always is, of a local group taking over responsibility for the building in order to turn it back into a modern cinema playing Michael Bay productions and selling overpriced popcorn.  I wouldn't even mind that so much - at least it would prevent the theatre from being demolished. But that's far from my own dream of seeing it reopened as a playhouse, something to give the local artists a place to work and the neighbourhood a true cultural center to call its own.

I don't think anything like that will ever happen. The days of the city reinvesting in itself simply for its own sake and the sake of the people who live here are, I fear, long gone. Those who care simply don't have the resources to do anything about it. And yet, some stubborn part of me refuses to give up hope.  It can't just be the lay folk who love this city enough to want to fix it. Maybe by some miracle someone wealthy shares my dream for the Empress Theatre and for the people in this neighbourhood. Maybe they too can see that we're actually all living in the gutter

Recipe - Steamed Mussels

I was going to make this recipe my internet friend linked me, because NOM and CHEESE, but my mussels were a bit too small and weren't already on the half shell. I am lazy so I wasn't going to spend an hour prying open two pounds of mussels.

I threw this together instead:

1/4 cup of red wine
1/4 cup of water
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1 small onion, quartered
2 stalks of celery, roughly chopped
2 large carrots, roughly chopped
2 motherflippin' pounds of mussels

Prepare the mussels - take any that are open and stick them in a bowl of cold water for a couple of minutes to see if they close. Throw out the ones that don't end up closing then rinse the rest thoroughly under cold water.

Throw wine, water and garlic into large pot. Bring to a boil and let flavours meld for a couple of minutes.

Toss in celery, carrots and onion and continue to boil until slightly softened (approx 5 minutes.)

Dump in all mussels, seal with a loosely fitting lid and let steam for exactly 5-7 minutes.

Remove mussels from pot, leaving any liquid in the pot.

And that's it.

I may have over cooked these by about a minute but no one complained. I served them with a simple garden salad, a fresh baguette and melted butter.

I'm back!

Yes, Virginia, there is definitely a need to maintain both a blogspot blog and a tumblr.

I love tumblr for it's tumblr-y aspects. Reblogging fandom stuff and interesting art and posting a picture or two of my own. However, any real blog substance gets completely lost within these posts. It discourages me from posting anything sincere.

Also, most of the people I know online do not have tumblrs. They have excellent blogs elsewhere and I'd like to be able to follow them without relying on bookmarks or direct urls.

I may migrate one or two of my tumblr text posts over here, so if you see a repeat or two don't panic. I'll be concentrating all my new blog content here and tumblr will remain full of the other fun wonderstuff.

Should I Stay or Should I Go?

I'm still not sure if there's a point in having both a tumblr AND a blogspot blog.

We'll test it. If anyone comments on this post within the next 30 days or so I'll try to keep both. If not, I'll move permanently over to my tumblr until something significant compels me to return here.

Recipe - Tomato, onion and garlic Provencale

So I completely did not make a single dish from my previous post. Not even the red onion dip which was literally just chopped red onions mixed with sour cream.

Alas, we persevere. I made other fun things. Nothing terribly fancy but here they are:

To me this looks like simple roast veggies. What I think makes it a provencale is the stove top carmelization at the end (my 4 seconds spent checking it on Google yielded no concrete definition for a provencale - if you know what it is feel free to correct me).

Prior to going in the oven:

Photobucket

It was ridiculously tasty.

I adapted my dish from the recipe over at one of my favourite cooking sites Simple, Fresh, Delicious. I didn't have thyme or rosemary so I used fresh parsley and basil instead. I made up for a half portion of red wine vinegar with balsamic, and added a teaspoon of hot mustard. We also added potatoes to make the food go a bit further.

I can't remember the protein we had with it, if any, that's how memorable this simple recipe of roasted tomatoes and onions turned out to be. I haven't had a more comforting or aromatic vegetable dish in a long while.

(Plus it makes me feel all kinds of upper class saying I know how to make a provencale.)

Flour tortillas

Okay, so, let me explain. Actually, let me defend my mother.

Growing up, my mom showed me many times how to make dough. She knew what she was doing and tried her best with me. The problem was that I was a portly, eating-obsessed child and so never paid near as much attention to her instruction as I did to how much longer it would be until whatever we were making was ready, or to sneaking an illicit spoonful of chocolate batter or a slice of lemon and sugar coated apples. Some of the best memories in my life are baking with her in our bright kitchen.

As I said in my previous post, I've never made myself a pie crust. I've worked on them with my mom but never trusted myself to complete the recipe without her. Nor have I ever then made a pizza dough, or a loaf of bread (even in the bread machine) and I've never made flour tortillas, which is to some akin to admitting I've never boiled pasta.

Photobucket

In fact, I still haven't made any on my own. Joël and I did these together, and they're all the better for it.

Photobucket

Served with it was my own on-the-fly recipe for Sweet Pepper Chicken:

Photobucket

Please ignore the spinach in this photo. We didn't end up using it!

Butter or olive oil
1 red chili, chopped
2-3 tbs fresh chopped coriander
1/4 fresh chopped parsley (optional)
salt and pepper (as needed)
1/4 cup lemon juice
2 cloves garlic, chopped
1-2 medium onions, chopped
1 cup chopped sweet peppers
4 chicken backs
3/4 - 1 cup chicken broth

Parboil chicken. Set aside to cool. When it's cool, remove meat from bones.

In sauce pan over medium high heat brown onions in butter with salt and pepper until mostly translucent. Add a bit of butter to hottest part of pan. When it's mostly melted add garlic and chilis. Spray them with a dash of lemon juice, then let cook for 1-2 minutes.

Stir everything together then lower heat slightly to add cilantro, parsley, 1/2 cup of chicken broth (added slowly), more lemon juice and more butter or olive oil if needed. Cook, stirring frequently, until flavours are melded and sauce has thickened. Then, turn up heat, add peppers, shredded chicken and remainder of broth and bring everything to a boil. Cook until peppers are softened and the chicken cooked, then reduce heat to medium low and continue cooking until the broth has reduced again.

Photobucket

Serve over fresh baked torillas with a bit of salsa (I've yet to venture into making it from scratch) and it's delicious and very inexpensive.

Photobucket

I loved this meal for many reasons. Most of my young adulthood when I should have been practicing making dough and things was spent not taking very good care of myself at all. Being in a place where I have the focus and inclination to spend time cooking food like this is wonderful beyond words. Having such a great cooking partner in my fiance and such a cozy apartment to hold the the warmth and aroma of our efforts only makes it better.
